Specific Terms for each of our main services:

Premades

What are premades?

Premade covers are images that Pretty AF Designs makes and promotes as a standard representation of a genre/demographic/trope. The art is promoted for sale at a reduced cost when compared to our normal prices because the art is ready-made and will not be adjustable in any significant way that changes the design. Changes that are acceptable in these instances include author name, font, title and colour. Please be aware that some changes will come at an additional cost to the buyer.

License:

  • You will be buying the license to use this artwork as your book cover for time/impressions stated in the license agreement. (Same as you do with custom covers). You should be aware that you are not buying the art; you are purchasing a limited right to use it.

  • Unless otherwise stated, the image will be provided on a standard license agreement. This allows you to use the cover on your book and in some cases on giveaway merchandise such as postcards. Generally, this permits 250,000-500,000 print impressions of your cover before you need to renew your license with us. We will let you know the specifics in your personalised license agreement

  • You will not have permission to use this on ‘for sale merchandise’ or ‘print on demand items’ as this breaks the terms of your stock license. If you wish to use it for such things, you will need to ask for a commercial use license from us and expect to pay the additional costs that occur.

  • In some cases, you will be granted an exclusive license. This is where the art has been entirely drawn or illustrated by us, or the photography is our own. In this case, you will be granted the right to use your cover on any merchandise (free & for sale) option and with a lifetime usage (unlimited impressions).

  • If you require us to grant you ownership/copyright of our artwork please ask. You will be provided with the original layered photoshop file and all extended stock used. We will relinquish our rights to the artwork. But please be aware that this is our most expensive option and that prices will vary based on how much stock was used to create your art.

Costs & Pricing:

  • The cover will be given a base price by the artist that will take into account all stock used, the difficulty of design, hours taken to create it and the license being provided to the buyer.

  • Included in this base price will be a JPEG version of your cover, a PDF version of your cover, cover sizing for print, Title changes, author name changes, and the addition of any required text such as taglines or blurb.

  • Any additional amendments to the image will come at a small cost per change. These include; colour changes, model swaps (only in some circumstances), and changes required for series sets.

  • Buyers will be expected to pay the base price invoice upfront. The base changes will be made and cover sent as soon as possible. In the instance that additional changes are needed, you will receive a secondary invoice for these once you have approved a preview of the new/amended art. As soon as the second invoice is paid, you will receive your final art. You will be given a costs list to approve before any additional work is done so that you are always aware of what you will be paying and receiving.

IMPORTANT things to be aware of:

  • We do not give permission for our art to be used in any groups where strangers are permitted to demean the design. If you are not confident in the premade you have selected, don’t buy it. By all means, direct your closest and most trusted readers/friends/book people to my pages to look at the art and give you an honest opinion. But we strongly believe that you will know what you want when you see it and if you are unsure, then it’s probably not the cover for you. Always be sure about your choices; never settle.

  • We do not give permission for you to sell on the premade cover should you find you don’t use it. This is becoming a common practice among impulse buyers in the industry. We know things happen and writing plans change, but buyers do not have the legal rights to pass on the art because you only bought a license to USE it. If you find you no longer want to use our cover, please return to us and we will discuss options. In some cases, we might be willing to put the art up for resale and then reimburse you the BASE PRICE that you paid for it. Please note that any additional personalisation and changes you asked for will not be reimbursed as that work was undertaken for you and in good faith.

  • If you choose a premade and have plans to create a series of books, please let us know as soon as possible and we will endeavour to create a fluid series branding for you. You can purchase all of the series art at one time or you could purchase each cover as and when you need them. Just chat with us about your needs & requirements.

  • When referencing your artist, please name Pretty AF Designs. If you are writing a YA or are worried about the implications of the AF in our name, please use Aurelia Fray or #PAFD instead.

  • Your statutory rights are upheld & unaffected by these T&C’s.

Cover Art: Ebook and Print

About our Covers and process:

Our commissioned covers are unique art pieces that we create to fulfil a brief laid out by you, the client. We discuss lots of variables and ask lots of questions about your project to get a feel for the cover you are looking for. We also research the current trends in your genre and demographic to be sure we are creating a cover that not only works with the trends but makes your book stand out among its peers.

Once we are all happy and have a good understanding of your needs, we send you an invoice for the deposit monies. This is usually 25% of your full fee depending on the commission.

As soon as the deposit is paid, you are formally booked in for a scheduled date and number of days to complete your project.

You will receive an email from us close to the start date of your booking and we create up to three rough concept designs for you to approve. If one is chosen, we proceed and make your final draft. If none are chosen, you have the option of requesting another concept at small additional cost (see prices below) or cancelling the commission. If you’ve chosen to proceed, a new invoice for a further 25% will be sent so that we can move to the next stage. Once your final design is completed, we send you a watermarked version for approval that we can discuss or make minor adjustments on. If there is a major change at this point it will come at additional cost.

If you are happy, we send one final invoice for all remaining monies and, as soon as that is paid, you receive your finished files. Simple!

License:

  • You will be buying the license to use this artwork as your book cover for time/impressions stated in the license agreement. You should be aware that you are not buying the art; you are purchasing a limited right to use it.

  • Unless otherwise stated, the image will be provided on a standard license agreement. This allows you to use the cover on your book and in some cases on giveaway merchandise such as postcards. But please be aware that this is our most expensive option and that prices will vary based on how much stock was used to create your art.

Costs & Pricing:

  • Covers and cover packages are listed with a base Starting Price. This is the lowest possible price you will pay for your commission.

  • Additional costs occur when you request multiple concepts beyond the those included in the base price, or when you make late changes to the design after the art was approved/agreed upon.

  • Additional concepts will be priced at £10 per additional design.

  • For late or large changes please expect to pay between 25% and 50% of the overall base price. (For example, you receive your final design and despite it being approved earlier you now think you want a different model/background/concept. As the work/hours will need to be put in twice, the cost of this time, effort, stock changes etc will be added to your bill and will be payable UPFRONT of any new changes being made).

  • Large scale changes to colour or positioning that require elements of the design to be remade again and again will cost between £10 and £25 per change.

  • You will always be notified of any additional charges and invoiced accordingly before the new work is completed to ensure that there will be no time wasting or dubious dealings.

  • Final files included in this base price will be a JPEG version of your cover, a PDF version of your cover, and cover sizing for print.

IMPORTANT things to be aware of:

  • We do not give permission for our art to be used in any groups where strangers are permitted to demean the design. If you are not confident in the Cover we have created, don’t buy it. You have many opportunities throughout the process to change your mind or raise concerns. By all means, direct your closest and most trusted readers/friends/book people, to look at the art and give you an honest opinion. But we strongly believe that you will know what you want when you see it and if you are unsure, then it’s probably not the cover for you. Always be sure about your choices; never settle.

  • When referencing your artist, please name Pretty AF Designs. If you are writing a YA or are worried about the implications of the AF in our name, please use Aurelia Fray or #PAFD instead.

  • We do not allow other artists to change, adapt, crop, or edit our designs. If you need a new shape, size or audio covers, you must come back to us to have it completed.

  • We have the right to refuse or cancel a commission should we feel that:

    • our art is not right for your project,

    • that we cannot create what you need

    • that you are not serious about a commission or are time-wasting.

    • That you have broken our terms and conditions in some way.

In some of these instances, you may lose any monies paid to date and will not receive any art. In most cases, you will lose your deposit should work have already started. In few cases, (particularly those where we have been unable to uphold your booking and no work has begun) we will return your deposit.

Your statutory rights are upheld & unaffected by these T&C’s.

Formatting: Ebook and Print

About our Formatting and process:

Formatting is the act of placing text or art into a document in a way that is neat, attractive, and reader-friendly. At Pretty AF Designs, we format ebooks & print books; illustrated books, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, catalogues, brochures and so forth.

We offer a variety of choice from plain, traditional style interiors to illustrated interiors and artistic text design.

When you book a format, you will receive an invoice and confirmation email from us requesting your booking deposit of 25%. Closer to the start date of your booking, you will receive another email letting you know we are ready to begin and giving you an opportunity to let us know if your needs or circumstances have changed and to send your FINAL edited and checked file.

Your file:

  • This file should be completely edited.

  • The track changes accepted and turned off.

  • You should already have checked for typos etc (though we know these can be missed even with the most expert of eyes on the file).

  • Your front matter and back matter should be included in the file or attached to the email as a separate file.

  • Any illustrations should be sent as separate, individual files and references to their names added into the body of your manuscript for reference of positioning.

Non-art formatting will begin right away and you will be presented with a watermarked PDF file to check and approve before the we send out an invoice for the final monies owed. As soon as this is paid your mobi/epub/PDF files are sent to you accordingly.

In the case of Art formatting or unusual layout formats, we will start with a base format and then apply any artwork concepts to your file. Where the concept has been previously decided, you will be sent a three-chapter concept proof to check and approve. Where there are multiple concepts to choose from, you will be sent three chapters from each design to check and decide upon. As soon as a decision is made, we finish the file and send a watermarked version for proofing. Upon approvals you will receive your final invoice for all outstanding monies and then your final files.

In the case where none of the concepts are chosen, you have the option of requesting another concept at small additional cost (see prices below) or cancelling the commission. As all times you will be given the opportunity to discuss and revise ideas or make changes. Small changes will not incur costs but larger changes may incur small additional costs.

Costs & Pricing:

  • Formatting packages are listed with a base Starting Price. This is the lowest possible price you will pay for your commission and will include 2 art concepts where art formatting has been chosen.

  • Additional concepts will be priced at £10 per additional design.

  • Large scale changes to colour or positioning that require elements of the design to be remade again and again will cost between £10 and £25 per change.

  • Any changes to the body text of your manuscript, such as new words, deletion of words or sentences, typo fixes etc will incur charges starting at £10 and increasing depending on the number of fixes, size of the correction, or time taken to complete the changes.

  • You will always be notified of any additional charges and invoiced accordingly before the new work is completed to ensure that there will be no time-wasting or dubious dealings.

  • Final files included in this base price will be a PDF for print version of your book, an epub version of your ebook and/or a mobi for kindle version. You will also be told the correct details of your print format size to convey to your cover artist for making print covers.

IMPORTANT things to be aware of:

  • Your formatter should be the LAST person to work on your file before publishing. Because of this, you must ensure that all edits and proofing has been done PRIOR to having a book formatted. We use industry-standard software to format your file and prepare it for printing. As such, we only provide you with FINISHED copies of your books and not editable ones. Once the format is complete, editing the file either means we must go in and make hard changes on your behalf, or you must have the entire book formatted again. If your book is polished and truly ready for printing, this shouldn’t be a problem.

  • We do not give permission for our art to be used in any groups where strangers are permitted to demean the design. If you are not confident in the design we have created, don’t buy it.

  • If you choose to have formats by us and have plans to create a series of books, please let us know as soon as possible and we will endeavour to create a fluid series branding for you. You can purchase all of the series art at one time or you could purchase each format as and when you need them. Just chat with us about your needs & requirements.

  • When referencing your formatter, please name Pretty AF Designs. If you are writing a YA or are worried about the implications of the AF in our name, please use Aurelia Fray or #PAFD instead.

  • We do not allow other artists to change, adapt, crop, or edit our designs. If you need a change made, you must come back to us to have it completed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. We’re happy to help.
